The 4.5+ level may have up to three 5.0 players on a team roster. Only one 5.0 level player may participate in a team match and may only play in the #1 position, either singles or doubles. A player who is rated 4.0 is not eligible to play in the #1 singles position.

A team match consists of (1) singles match and (3) doubles matches. One default is allowed.  The match format is: Best of two sets, regular scoring, set tiebreak (first to 7 by a margin of 2) at 6-all, with a match tiebreak (first to 10 by a margin of 2) in lieu of a third set. Major Regulation Changes

  1. Changing Adult 40 & Over format for National Championships to (1) singles, (3) doubles. HPS/USTA Regulations 1.04A; ODTA 11 &16

  2. Eligibility to advance to National Championships for self-rated and computer-rated appealed players requires playing at least four (4) matches on the same team at the same level in the same Age Group. No defaults received count. HPS/USTA League Regulations 2.03A(4); ODTA 26

Sectional Championships and below: Hawaii Pacific Section elects to have self-rated and computer-rated appealed players to play at least three (3) matches on the same team to advance to Sectional Championships and below. Of those three matches, no defaults received shall count. Championships include local (flight) playoffs, district playoffs and Sectional Championships.

  3. Below level players are not allowed to play #1 positions when participating in 4.5+ level matches. HPS/USTA League Regulations 2.01A; ODTA 11

Only one 5.0 level player may participate in a team match and may only play in the #1 position, either singles or doubles. A player who is rated 4.0 is not eligible to play in the #1 singles position.

Note:  If the NTRP ratings of the players available and on-site for a team match would result in an individual match default at the #1 position(s), a lower (below) level player may play at the #1 position(s), provided no available at level player is playing below the #1 position(s). In such case(s), the above-mentioned restrictions shall be waived.

  4. A player without a valid NTRP rating level in TennisLink, a returning player with an expired NTRP rating level, a Tournament Exclusive (T) rated player or a Mixed Exclusive (M) rated player who does not have a valid computer (C) rating from a previous year and chooses to participate in the Adult Division, must self-rate to be assigned a new rating, reassigned to their last expired rating or a higher rating based on their playing history to enter the USTA League Program.  HPS/USTA League Regulations 1.04F; ODTA 6

  5. Head-to-head tie-break procedures clarified.  Winner of head-to-head match between the tied teams only if all tied teams have played each other and one team defeated all the teams that are tied. HPS/USTA League Regulations 2.03H; ODTA 16.

  6. The Championship Committee has the authority to file a grievance when match default(s) given by a team has a material impact on the championship’s standings. HPS/USTA League Regulations 2.03K; ODTA 22

Reminders to Captains & Players

  1. All captains and players must act in accordance with ODTA Tennis Court Rules. (ODTA Addendum III)

  2. Withholding pertinent information when self-rating is an egregious act and a violation of National Regulation 1.04E(4) (Player Agreement) and can lead to consequences. Sanctions may include suspension from USTA League Tennis for the captain, player and team. Captains do not self-rate players. Players should do their own self-rating according to the General & Experienced Player Guidelines.

  3. No coaching allowed at any time during a match.  Cell phones and other electronic communication devices may not be used at any time during a match (including warm-up, change-overs, set breaks, and bathroom breaks). (ODTA 21)

  4. For each team match, a majority of the individual matches (positions) must actually be played to constitute a valid team match. The maximum number of positions that can be defaulted in a team match and the number of positions that must actually be played without defaulting the entire team match are shown in Defaults and Retirements. (ODTA 22; HPS 2.01C(2))

  5. Warning: Captains and players can be sanctioned for falsifying USTA League match scores and/or reporting matches in TennisLink that were not actually played.  Individuals found in violation can receive sanctions that include being denied the opportunity to advance to championships, suspension from USTA League play and captains being prohibited from captaining teams.  This is a recreational league and unethical and unsportsmanlike behavior of any individuals associated with USTA League Tennis will not be tolerated. HPS Player Guide; (ODTA 26)
